How to Install Wallpaper Engine on Windows
Install Wallpaper Engine through Steam, find it in your library, choose a display, and subscribe to your first animated wallpaper.

Before you install
Wallpaper Engine is a paid Windows application distributed through Steam. The Android companion app is separate, and the desktop application does not run natively on macOS or Linux.
Check the current system requirements and supported Windows versions on the Steam store page before buying. Windows N editions may also need Microsoft's Media Feature Pack for video playback.
- Install the current Steam client and sign in.
- Make sure the PC has enough free space for the application and any Workshop wallpapers you subscribe to.
- Use the official Steam listing so Workshop subscriptions and updates work normally.

Install it from your Steam library
After purchase, open Library in Steam and search for Wallpaper Engine. Steam may classify it as software instead of a game, so enable Software in the library filter if it is missing.
Select Wallpaper Engine, choose Install, confirm the destination, and wait for Steam to finish. You can add it to Favorites if you want it to stay near the top of your library.
Launch Wallpaper Engine and choose a display
Launch Wallpaper Engine from Steam. After the first setup, it can remain available from the Windows notification area. If opening it again appears to do nothing, check the system tray because the application may already be running.
On a multi-monitor PC, select the display you want to configure before choosing a wallpaper. You can assign wallpapers individually or create a display group when you want one wallpaper to span compatible screens.
Subscribe to your first wallpaper
Open the Workshop tab, search or browse, then select a wallpaper and subscribe. Steam downloads the Workshop item and Wallpaper Engine adds it to the Installed tab.
Use resolution, type, age rating, and other filters to narrow large result sets. A wallpaper does not always need to match the display resolution exactly, but choosing an appropriate aspect ratio usually avoids awkward cropping.
- Scene wallpapers can offer interactive or configurable effects.
- Video wallpapers are straightforward but can use more storage at high resolutions.
- Web wallpapers can be interactive and vary widely in resource use.

Set startup and performance behavior
Open Wallpaper Engine settings and decide whether it should start with Windows. Then review the Playback section. The safest gaming setup is to pause or stop wallpapers while another application is full screen.
If a wallpaper affects performance, lower its frame rate or quality, choose a lighter project, or set full-screen applications to stop the wallpaper and free its memory.
If installation or launch fails
Restart Steam, verify the application files, and check whether security software quarantined anything in the Wallpaper Engine folder. For a black or broken interface, use the official safe-mode and graphics-driver troubleshooting steps rather than downloading replacement files from third-party sites.
